The caliber of Rowland wines starts from Gerald Rowlands
control over all facets of the process, from vine management,
his choice of winemaking products and techniques, package design
and marketing the wines.
The Australian-born Rowland holds
a degree from Roseworthy College, South Australia specializing
in viticulture and enology, with further studies at University
of California, Davis. He began his career with B Seppelts and
Sons, Barrossa Valley, where he contributed his expertise for
six years. His introduction to Napa Valley winemaking came in
the great year of 1987 at Stags Leap Winery. This was followed
by an eight-year tenure as assistant winemaker at Chappellet
winery. There he developed his expertise dealing with mountainside
fruit. In 1997, Rowland devoted his full time to his own venture,
while also acting as consulting winemaker for other boutique
wineries.
Rowlands pursuit of quality
in all aspects of winemaking led to an unexpected endeavor: inventions.
Not always finding equipment to meet his high standards, Rowland
designed and refined tools for winemaking. Since California winemakers
have been quick to recognize the benefits of such equipment,
the tools can be found in most West Coast wineries.
Winemaking and grape growing
are in Gerald Rowlands blood. In 1537, his German ancestors
first put the family crest on a wine label, and brokered it throughout
Europe. Rowland himself was raised in Australias famed
wine region, the Barrossa Valley, where his father farmed grapes. |
