MERLOT
Merlots first noted appearance was as
late as 1784 in the Libournais area of France, now apart of the
more commonly known area of Pomerol in Bordeaux.
The popularity of Merlot has
recently grown rapidly through out the world. This in part is
due to soft accessible wines that it produces especially when
compared to Cabernet Sauvignon. It has also become a favorite
with growers as it is the easiest to ripen of all the Bordeaux
varieties. Yields can be some what variable as Merlot is very
sensitive to weather conditions when in flower.
Although becoming increasingly
more popular as a variety, Merlot still plays a very important
part of blending with Cabernet Sauvignon. This is not to say
that either variety is better than each other but that the combination
is better than either of its components. The once over-looked
variety has emerged in to the spotlight in the late 20th century.
