1995 PINOT NOIR
San Francisco Examiner
April 21st, 1999
CELLAR SELECTION
by Gerald D. Boyd
Rowland, a new name on the wine
scene, has settled on Atlas Peak for this flavorful Pinot Noir.
Rowland discovered a Pinot Noir
vineyard on Atlas Peak, on the eastern side of Napa Valley, that
was about to be converted to Merlot, saved it and made a concentrated
Pinot from the 1995 vintage.
Using wild yeast, the wine was fermented
100 percent whole berry, a technique that preserves the freshest
true-fruit flavors of the grape. The wine was aged in French oak
and bottled unfiltered.
Rowland 1995 Atlas Peak Pinot Noir
has a brilliant medium-ruby color. The aromatics are bright and
forward, with ripe black-cherry and smoked bacon accents.
The flavors are explosive and lush,
with silky tannins under boiled tea, smoked bacon and cranberry.
Match this fruity pinot Noir with
grilled salmon, roast turkey with cranberry sauce and grilled
steaks.
