1998 JILL'S
VINEYARD PINOT NOIR
The Insiders’ Wine Line
1999 Tasting Notes
Volume 3, Number 4
90 POINTS “OUTSTANDING”
The
1998 Pinot Noir, Jill’s Vineyard, Central Otago ~ New Zealand
(Unfiltered) has an exotic perfumed nose of raspberry, cassis,
ripe strawberry, all spice, pepper and mulberry with floral highlights.
The rich flavors of berries, pie sherry, cinnamon, toast, herbs
and tobacco are concentrated with good depth and texture followed
by a bright, fruity, expansive finish. Very attractive.

WE RECOMMEND WINE OF THE WEEK by Michael Lonsford

This
week’s featured wine is a delight, a long distance winner from
southern New Zealand. Here’s a light to medium weight red wine
with all the requisite cinnamon, clove, beetroot, bacon, and strawberry
flavors. Great with lamb or rare beef. Or grilled salmon or tuna.
The $24.99 tariff isn’t inexpensive, but it shouldn’t martial
your budget either. It may take some looking, but the search is
worth it. Michael Lonsford writes about wine in Wednesday's food
section.

AROUND THE WORLD IN
25 WINES by Bob Thompson
Globalization
in a bottle : a transplanted Aussie winemaker in Napa consults
in New Zealand, where he made this intense, pure, altogether memorable
Pinot from three acres that should give Burgundians longer pause
than any other patch in the New World.

VINTAGE EXPERIENCES "EXCEPTIONAL"
A
truly dramatic example of a great Pinot Noir from the cool climate
of the southern island of New Zealand. Cinnamon, plum, and clove,
with hints of fresh tomato and cherry. A fascinating combination
of fruit and earth components. Quite a bargain for a world class
Pinot Noir.

WINE FINDS By
Robert Whitley

There
are some who believe New Zealand will become the next great location
for Pinot Noir, and it’s easy to see why after tasting the Rowland
Jill’s Vineyard. Bright fruit aromas of blackcherry, cherry and
raspberry have a purity and focus that only a top vineyard can
deliver. This wine has exceptional length on the palate, and a
long lingering finish, much like a fine Burgundy. Hints of cinnamon
add a spice dimension that is extremely attractive to this wine.
New Zealand has carved an excellent
international reputation for its intense Sauvignon Blancs. Add
Pinot Noir to this list of great wines from the Kiwis.
