Thanks to Messrs. Boeing, McDonnell, Douglas, et al., the world's
getting smaller by the minute. Nowhere is this more evident than
in the latest phenomenon in the wine business: the flying winemaker.
While some winemakers from California "consult" in
Europe, and some European winemakers do likewise in California,
even more practice their craft in the fall in the Northern Hemisphere,
and in the spring in the Southern Hemisphere. Quite a few winemakers
work both in California and Argentina; or California and Chile;
or California and Australia; or California and New Zealand.
Count Gerry Rowland among the last. He lives in California's
Napa Valley, where he makes several wines under three different
labels. He also makes one wine in New Zealand. Not bad for a guy
from... Australia.
Rowland was raised in Australia's well-known Barossa Valley wine
region. He worked there at Seppelt before moving north to Stags
Leap Winery in 1987. Then It was on to Chappellet Vineyards for
several years before he went out on his own in 1997.
Now he makes upward of 4,000 cases --all red wine. Rowland, whose
labels include Rowland, Ramspeck and Cenay, was in town recently
to work the market and show his wines which are handled here by
Horizon Wines.
Rowland's 2000 Rowland "Red Triangle" Syrah --* * *
* 1/2 - -from Napa, a rich, lush, black-fruit-infused wine with
a touch of pepper and minerals that cries out for grilled meats.
There are quite a few coarse, earthy California syrahs on the
market, but this isn't one of them. About $26.59.
