2002 CABERNET SAUVIGNON
Timing
is Everything!
The strategy
for 2002 was simple: to manage the vines so that a crop was grown
in balance with the climate of that year. With hot weather expediting
ripening, I took immediate action by doing nothing!
What … no
fruit to drop? No …No fruit to drop yet! Timing is crucial, my
wife Linda always tells me.
We waited
for the heat to pass using the extra fruit to slow down the ripening
process. Then once we had returned to our typical cool night and
warm days we cluster profiled and dropped the yield back to 3
tons per acre. Besides reducing crop, we also worked at exposing
100% of the fruit to the sun by plucking off all of the leaves
within, above and below the cluster. We also made countless passes
through the vineyard removing unwanted, fruitless shoots that
could shade the crop.
The Alexander
Valley fruit has proved to be yet again a great addition to the
Napa Valley cabernet giving a diverse range of dark black cherry
fruits that compliment the ripe blackberry anise character of
the Napa fruit. .
