2002PINOT
NOIR
Continuity
from Clones and Appellations!
For the '02
Pinot Noir we used three clones: Dijon #115 , #32 and Pommard
#5. Clone 32 is from our Napa Valley vineyard and produces full
body dark fruit characters. The Dijon and Pommard clones are both
from Mendocino. The Dijon attributes tend to be more floral in
aromas and flavor while the Pommard is dark ripe cherry, firm
bodied and has good color. When blending the clones I find the
32 gives a good base of which then it is a matter of determining
the amount of Dijon #115 or Pommard #5 depending on the requirements
of the blend of that vintage weather it should need more fruit
or more body.
The value
of using the Napa and Mendocino appellations since '99 continues
to show just how valuable the North Coast appellation is. By being
able to take the reliance off one specific appellation we have
been able to bring some consistency to one of the most inconsistent
varietals. This I think also bodes well for the value and power
of the North Coast appellation as a whole in producing outstanding
wines of value and quality.
