2001 RODGERS
VINEYARD PINOT
NOIR
Life,
2571 Miles from Ground Zero!
Yes, we harvested
on September 11th, 2001 - unaware of the events on the East Coast
till late morning. There is no news service in the vineyard at
6 am.
For us, the
day began with confidence and anticipation, not fear and shock.
We were filled with the promise of a new vintage (and a few pots
of very strong coffee).
A light
crop in 2001 harvest left me wondering: how much and how good
was it going to be? Well, the "how much" still remains
a problem at only 260 cases. The "how good" comes down
to the reduced crop and our vigilant work in the vineyard. We
exposed the fruit 100% to the sun by countless passes through
the vineyard, removing unwanted shoots and leaves that shaded
the crop. This helped to develop more color and the intense berry
characters.
A broad bouquet
of dried cherries, spices, minerals, earth and tobacco scents
fill the glass. On the palate, dried cherries follow through with
consistency, the mid - palate is enriched with ground cloves and
spices followed by a long finish.
