1999 RODGERS VINEYARD
PINOT NOIR
“Nothing
succeeds like excess!” (Oscar Wilde)
...and for
California Pinot Noir, excess time on the vine is never a problem.
A long cool spring and start to summer got the vines off to an
extended, slow season. As production levels are closely tied to
the weather, the forecast was for low yields, small berries and
a late harvest. Then September, usually our warmest month, brought
more mild days with cool nights… all excellent for Pinot!
A summary
so far: small berries, low yields and a late harvest…mmm! Sounds
like the makings for a potentially superb year for Pinot Noir.
The Bottom
line? Extra time on the vine enabled the leaves to catch more
quality sunlight. This helped the vine develop more fruit character,
flavor and color to be stored in a smaller yield. This wines success
is due to an excess of perfect growing and ripening conditions
for Rodger‘s Vineyard.
