2001 JILL'S VINEYARD PINOT NOIR, NEW ZEALAND

Raising The Bar

The 2001 vintage from Jill's vineyard sets an even higher standard for this vineyard's potential. It comes from the learning curve of a new region, the reduction of inspiring concepts from around the world, and tried and true farming method's we've used to date.

The success of this harvest started 6 years ago. We retrained the vines, conducted seven different yeast trials, numerous fermentation experiments, barrels aging trials and preparations for bottling. I believe that, rather than having reached a pinnacle, we are just beginning to truly grasp the possibilities of this extraordinary location.

A cool summer was followed by a mild-to-warm ripening period. Once again, harvest was late. Fortunately, I'm a patient guy. I prefer a late harvest-it usually means extra flavor and color due to the additional hang time. The benefited from the wait, preserving the uniquely delicate spice characteristic of Central Otago.
